Which Exit is Hachiko at Shibuya Station? Directions & Which Underground Exit to Use from Hanzomon Line and More

Hachiko Shibuya Station

When you think of Shibuya, Hachiko is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Located right in front of JR Shibuya Station, it’s arguably the most famous meeting spot in Japan. So, Shibutama is here to show you exactly which exit to use to get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station!

Hachiko at Shibuya Station: The “Hachiko Exit” and “Exit 8”

Hachiko in Shibuya is so famous that the exit is named after it. So, the exit for Hachiko is the “Hachiko Exit.” From JR lines, just exit the “Hachiko Gate,” and you’ll be right there.

For subway lines like the Hanzomon Line and Tokyu Toyoko Line, aim for “Exit 8.” The exit for Hachiko is conveniently named “Hachi-ban Deguchi” (meaning “Exit Number Eight”). It might sound like a joke, but it’s true!

Now, let’s look at how to get to Hachiko from each train line!

How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station ① JR Lines

From JR lines, first aim for the “Hachiko Gate.”

  1. From the JR Line platform, head towards the “Hachiko Gate.” (You’ll go down a level from the platform.)
  2. After exiting the Hachiko Gate, turn left and go out through the “Hachiko Exit.”
  3. The “Hachiko statue” is about 50 meters straight ahead from the exit. It might be hard to spot due to the large crowd, but it’s to the left, just before the Scramble Crossing. Even though I’ve exited from the Hachiko Exit and crossed the Scramble Crossing many times, I’ve only seen Hachiko a handful of times!

How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station ② Hanzomon Line / Den-en-toshi Line

The Hanzomon Line and Den-en-toshi Line are directly connected, so you’ll arrive on the same platform.

  1. First, exit from the “Hachiko Gate.”
  2. After exiting the gate, turn right immediately.
  3. You’ll immediately see an escalator with “A8” written largely on a yellow sign. Take it up.
  4. After getting off the escalator, turn right immediately.
  5. Walk a short distance, and you’ll see an escalator on your left.
  6. Take that up, and you’ll emerge directly onto the ground level. That’s Hachiko Square.
  7. The “Hachiko statue” will be to your right after getting off the escalator. Once you exit the Hachiko Gate, just aim for Exit A8.

How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station ③ Toyoko Line / Fukutoshin Line

Shibuya Station for the Toyoko Line and Fukutoshin Line is underground. First, aim for the Den-en-toshi Line platform.

  1. When you arrive at Shibuya Station on the Toyoko Line, find the sign that says “DT Den-en-toshi Line H Hanzomon Line” from the platform and follow the directions to take the escalator up. (Other lines like JR and Ginza Line are also in the same direction.)
  2. After getting off the escalator, follow the signs for “DT Den-en-toshi Line H Hanzomon Line.”
  3. Walk for about a minute, and you’ll find an escalator marked “DT Den-en-toshi Line H Hanzomon Line.” Take that up, and you’ll arrive at the Den-en-toshi Line platform.
  4. Continue straight along the platform, and you’ll find an escalator with signs for JR lines, Ginza Line, and Hachiko Exit. Take that escalator up.
  5. After getting off the escalator, the “Hachiko Gate” will be diagonally behind you to the right. Exit from there.
  6. After exiting the gate, turn right immediately.
  7. You’ll immediately see an escalator with “A8” written largely on a yellow sign. Take it up.
  8. After getting off the escalator, turn right immediately.
  9. Walk a short distance, and you’ll see an escalator on your left.
  10. Take that up, and you’ll emerge directly onto the ground level. That’s Hachiko Square.
  11. The “Hachiko statue” will be to your right after getting off the escalator. The Hachiko Gate is a bit far from the Toyoko Line/Fukutoshin Line, which can be a little troublesome, but once you exit from there, the rest is easy.

How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station ④ Inokashira Line

The Inokashira Line is located a little further away, but it’s closer to Hachiko than other non-JR lines, and since it’s above ground, it’s easy to spot and find.

  1. Exit from the “Chuo-guchi (Central Exit) gate” of the Inokashira Line.
  2. Immediately after exiting, there’s an escalator diagonally to your front left. Take it down to ground level.
  3. After getting off the escalator, there’s a crosswalk directly in front of you. Cross it.
  4. After crossing the crosswalk, turn left.
  5. You’ll immediately come out into the square with the Scramble Crossing. That’s “Hachiko Square.” The Hachiko statue is immediately to your right. From the Inokashira Line, you’ll be fine as long as you don’t take the wrong escalator down.

How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station ⑤ Ginza Line

The Ginza Line is a bit of a distance. First, make sure you don’t choose the wrong exit.

  1. First, exit from the “Shibuya Scramble Square Exit” located at the end of the platform. (Be careful, as there’s also an exit in the opposite direction.)
  2. After exiting the gate, there are ticket machines to your left, but go through the passage immediately to their right.
  3. Immediately turn left and proceed straight along the path.
  4. After walking for about 30 seconds, you’ll see an escalator. Take it down.
  5. After getting off the escalator, you’re still on the 2nd floor. There’s another escalator immediately to your right going down. Take that further down.
  6. Once you’re on the ground level, immediately turn right.
  7. Walk a short distance. You’ll see the “Miyamasu-zaka Shita Crossing” straight ahead. Just before it, on your front left, is the JR “Miyamasu-zaka Exit.” Enter the building from there.
  8. Continue straight, and you’ll find the “Hachiko Exit.” Go outside from there again, and you’ll be in “Hachiko Square.” The Hachiko statue will be to your front left. That concludes the directions from each line.

Summary: How to Get to Hachiko from Shibuya Station

From JR lines, there’s the Hachiko Exit, and you’ll be right in Hachiko Square, making it easy to find. For subway lines, aiming for the “Hachiko Gate” will lead you to “Exit 8,” which is nearby and recommended.

The Ginza Line route might be the most confusing, but make sure you don’t take the wrong exit, and if in doubt, just get to ground level and aim for the JR station. That’s all from Shibutama!
